Will the Curt Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier 18100 Clear 2002 Jeep Wrangler TJ Spare when Folded
Question:
Will this carrier fold up and lock without hitting the spare tire on the back of my 2002 Jeep wrangler TJ or will I need some sort of modification?

On the Curt trailer hitch mount cargo carrier, # C18100, when folded it measures 5 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the nearest edge of the carrier. You will need to measure from the center of the hitch pin hole on your Jeep straight back to the distance required to clear the spare tire. If that distance is less than 5 inches, the carrier will fit when folded.
On Class III trailer hitches we have installed on TJs the average distance to clear the spare tire is greater than 5 inches. Based on these measurements the carrier would not fit when folded. But you will want to take the measurement on your TJ to be certain.
If the carrier will not clear the spare, you will not want to make any modifications to make it fit because that will void the warranty and can compromise the structural integrity of the carrier.
The folding carrier with the most clearance when folded is Draw-Tite cargo carrier # 6502. It measures 7-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the nearest edge of the carrier when folded. I have included a link to a video review and the instructions for this carrier for you.
