How Much Taller is a 5.30-12 Trailer Tire Compared to a 4.80-12 Trailer Tire

Question:

I have a 1994 Viking popup camper with 4.80 X 12 tires. I am wanting to get more height by going up in size to a 5.3 X 12. How much taller would this make my camper assuming I have the clearance in my wheel well? Thanks

Expert Reply:

For a 4.80-12 trailer tire, the overall diameter or height is 20.5 inches. For a 5.30-12 it is 21.9 inches. That is a difference of 1.4 inches but you will only see half of that, 0.7 inches, in added height.

Please keep in mind that going to a taller tire will raise the center of gravity of the trailer and can lead to the increased likelihood of sway. Going up 0.7 inches may not be much of a factor but you will just need to be aware of the possibility.

Also, the 5.30 tire will be 1/2 inch wider so you will need to make sure that you have clearance between the trailer frame and the inside sidewall of the tire as well as clearance above for the added height.
