Adapting a 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector on 2011 Toyota Tacoma to 6 Round on 1983 Coleman Camper

Question:

I have a 1983 Coleman pop up trailer. I need a 6 pole round adapter connector that would fit to my 2011 Tacoma 4 pole flat tow hitch. Would this one work? What do you suggest?

Since your truck has a 4-Way flat connector and the trailer has a 6-Way round, adapter # HM47320 will not work. It is made to go from a 6-Way round on a vehicle to a 4-Way flat on a trailer. What you need is an adapter like # A10-6034VP. Your 4-way will plug into the adapter, and you will need to ground the white wire to the truck frame. The other two wires on the adapter are black for 12-volt power and blue for electric brakes.

If you do not wish to use these functions, then you can tape them up and stow them out of the way. The trailer will then have only light functions. If you do want those functions to work you would need to add a 6-Way to the truck using # ETBC6 and a brake controller. I have included some links to help with the ETBC6 installation.

For a brake controller I recommend the P2, # 90885. It is easy to set up, easy to use, and it is reliable. I have included a link to the installation details for the P2 as well.

I guess the question I was asking was. I have a 6pole round female on my 1983 trailers and a 4pole flat on my 2011 Tacoma. I need a 6pole round metal male adapter that will connect to my truck without my doing any rewireing. I already paid to put in a tow hitch not realizing it does not work for the trailers.

Just to verify, you have a 4-Pole flat on the the Tacoma and a 6-Pole socket on the trailer. If this is not the setup you have, please email a picture of the connector on the truck and another of the connector on the trailer. Traditionally sockets are used on the vehicle side, not the trailer side so there is not a pre-built adapter for this. What we can do, is use a couple of connectors to build an adapter. We can use a Pollak 6-Pole connector, part PK11604 and a 4-Pole Trailer end, part W787268. We can then connect the loose ends on the 4 pole end to the Pollak 6-Pole and make our own adapter/jumper between the truck and trailer. I have also added a link to an article that includes information about wiring patterns for standard connectors. Do double check how your trailer is wired.
