Why is the Saris Freedom 4 Bike Rack Not Recommended for RVs?

Question:

Hello, I purchased this bike rack, just waiting on it to ship. Along with using it on my truck, I would like to use it on my RV trailer. The bumper is custom with extra support and weight approved. It has a receiver hitch custom welded on top, in the middle. I see that you do not recommend it’s use on RV or motor home, is that cuz weight or length off back and clearance issues?

The reason why we don't recommend the Saris Freedom 4 Bike Rack # SA4414B on an RV, motorhome, flat-towed vehicle, or 5th-wheel trailer is because of the added torque experienced at the rear of those vehicles while traveling. The added force can damage the bikes, the rack, or the hitch receiver, and it can be dangerous for other drivers on the road. Since your bumper is customized for extra support and has a welded-on receiver, it should be better off than a bolted-on hitch. However, the bike rack/bikes can still be susceptible to the extra force.

For a bike rack that is built to take the added torque and is compatible with your truck, I recommend the Swagman Trailhead RV Bike Rack for 4 Bikes - 2" Hitches # S63381. The Trailhead has a per-bike weight capacity of 35 pounds. If you have small children's bikes, women's bikes, or bikes with alternate frame styles, you will need to purchase a Swagman Deluxe Bike Frame Adapter Bar # 64005 when securing the bikes to the Trailhead.
