My 1971 Ideal Camper Has a Different Leaf Spring On One Wheel and Random Hardware In Suspension

Question:

I picked up a 1971 ideal 22 foot camper. The back right corner sags a bit and when I got underneath to look I noticed that the back right wheel only has four leaf springs while the rest of the wheels, the other three, have five. It has a tandem axle and I’m not sure why one would have four leaf springs when the others all have five. Is this an issue? Should I replace that 4 leaf spring with a 5 to match?

With the age of your 1971 Ideal 22' Camper I am going to recommend changing out all the suspension components. I happened to notice some of the hardware was also replaced at some time as well and it does not look like they used the correct parts either.

For the Leaf Springs you will need to jack up the camper to remove as much weight from the suspension as possible. You will need to measure the spring in a few places to be able to ensure that you find the correct replacements. I have included a picture as an example of the different measurements you will need to make. Once you have those and the trailer weights I can help you with finding the correct replacements. Be sure to measure the 5 leaf springs as they are the ones that most likely came on your camper originally.

The MORryde Suspension Upgrade Kit for Tandem Axle Trailers # MR76ZR will allow you to replace all the hardware and also gives you a wet bolt suspension system. This will greatly improve the suspensions ability to move through the range of articulation rather than hanging up due to excessive rust and wear. The shackle straps included in this kit measure 3-1/8" from center of bolt hole to center of bolt hole. If yours are different I can recommend a kit for your camper.

I always recommend the LubriMatic LMX Industrial Strength Grease # L11390 for campers as they always carry near the maximum weight rating. It would also be a good time to inspect the bearings and brakes on your hubs before you begin removing the suspension. That way you will be able to repack the bearings if needed or replace damaged and worn parts.

The CE Smith U-Bolt Kit # CE23103 will give you new set of u-bolts, nuts washers and spring plates for 1 axle. This is designed for a 2" square axle that is rated up to 3,500lbs. If your Ideal camper has something different let me know and I can find the correct kit.
