Ignition Position For Flat Towing A 2015 Volkswagen Beetle

Question:

Im planning to flat-tow a VW Beetle with a manual transmission/front wheel drive. Ive purchased the tow bar, bracket, wiring, and braking system from you but have another question. You mentioned that in flat towing you only have to put the ignition switch in the ACC position. Do you recommend anything to prevent the dingy steering wheel from jackknifing or just oversteering?

Expert Reply:

Putting the ignition into the ACC position prevents your steering column from locking up and will allow your wheels to turn freely as your motorhome turns. It has been recommended to keep the key in the ignition while in the ACC position to ensure your steering column stays unlocked. VW does not recommend flat towing but they have recommended a max speed of 65mph to prevent any steering issues, such as jackknifing or oversteering. So as long as your wheel can freely turn and you maintain a safe speed you should have no issues towing your 2015 Volkswagen Beetle.

You stated you've already purchased the tow bar, base plates, tow bar wiring, and braking system. If your tow bar didn't come with safety cables then I recommend the RoadMaster 68" Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables - 6,000lbs Item # RM-643.
