Can Two Trek Electric Bikes with Fenders and Cargo Carriers be Used with the Saris SuperClamp EX?

Question:

our two Trek ebikes have fenders. One use 29inch tires, the other 27. The front fender ends at about 12 oclock on the wheel, so the shepherds hook should work fine there, forward of the fender end. On the rear, though, the fenders end quite far down. The lowest is about 3 oclock on the wheel. Will there be enough clamping to keep the bikes stable and in position, if clamped only one the bare tires? Both bikes are fitted with very strong Rack-Time racks in back. Could the shepherds hooks be pressed against them, instead of the tire or fender?

I have a great solution for you. At eTrailer, we strongly recommend against using wheel-mount bike racks for bikes with fenders. There is no way to guarantee that the ratcheting hooks can secure the bike by the wheels at a 3-o'clock position on the Saris SuperClamp EX Bike Rack for 2 Bikes # SA4025F. In addition, we strongly discourage mounting a bike by any attached cargo carriers over the bike's wheels.

A great alternative bike rack that avoids these problems is the Swagman E-Spec Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes # S94FR. The E-Spec has the same per-bike weight capacity (60 pounds) as the SuperClamp EX. Also, the E-Spec can be used on your 2016 Mazda 3's factory hitch receiver. The frame mount is much safer to transport than a wheel mount in this situation because the fenders are prone to cracking and damage when attached at the wheels. Driving over potholes or any disturbance can offset the clamps.
