New Trailer Brakes Aren't Working Well With Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller

Question:

I just had my Prodigy P2 Brake Controller installed. I also just had my electric brakes replaced. When I hooked up the trailer, I set I did the manual test in a parking lot starting at level 6. I increased it incrementally up to 13 and the trailer brakes never locked up. Note, I believe I had the Prodigy set to b, not b1. I just want to make sure they are working and I want to make sure I dont over set them. Any suggestions? Thanks Chris

The first thing you'll want to do is make sure the brakes are properly adjusted an burnished, or 'broke in'. Adjusting the brakes allows for he brake shoes to apply the proper force to the brake drum, and burnishing the brakes allows the brake shoes and magnet to seat properly to the brake drum. If both these steps aren't taken, the brakes will not be as effective as they should be. Even if you have self adjusting brake assemblies, they'll need an initial adjustment, as it takes them awhile to self-adjust initially.

I'll link to a help article that discusses the adjustment and break-in procedure.
