Adding Electric Trailer Brakes To Trailer With 10 Hydraulic Drum Brakes

Question:

Have an old trailer sitting here that needs new brakes. Removed the tire and the drum shows HD 1377 10. What do you recommend. As of right now, it is hydraulic. Would you recommend switching these out to electrical to work with our trucks electric brake control or just swap out the pads? I have measured the spindle to determine the inner and outer bearing, my internal bearing measurements are 1-1/16inch and 1-3/8. Unfortunately I am not seeing any bearing numbers on the bearings themselves. I prefer electric brakes for more control, but I am open up to suggestions. Please let me know what parts I would need to fix or convert. Thank you for your help

I would be happy to help!

Based on the spindle information you provide and the markings on the hub your hub uses 10" braking assemblies and you could use Hydraulic Trailer Brake Kit - Uni-Servo - Free Backing - 10" - Left/Right Hand - 3,500 lbs # AKFBBRK-35 for a replacement. If your current mounting hardware is in bad shape you will need # BRKH10B as well.

Now to change over to electric brakes you would need to use electric trailer brake assemblies # AKEBRK-35-SA, and brake mounting hardware # BRKH10B.

If your drums are in need of replacement you will need # AKHD-545-35-K which are compatible with both electric and hydraulic brakes, and includes new inner bearing # L68149 with an ID of 1.378" and outer bearing # L44649 with an ID of 1.063" which will fit your spindle perfectly.

Next you will need to lock out or replace your surge brake coupler. If there are no bolt holes to lock it out, you can have it welded solid.

Moving on to the wiring side of things you will need to add a 7-way connector to the trailer using # HM20048 and junction box # 38656. You will need to use # 10-1-1 to go from the junction box to the brake magnets using heat shrink butt connectors # DW05745-5 for a weather tight connection.

To finish the conversion you will need break-away kit # 20400.

Since you mentioned your truck already has a 7-way connector and trailer brake controller, you have everything needed already on your vehicle.

I went ahead and added videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
