Okay, there's a lot to go over here, so let's get right to it with the best option for a hitch and 7-way for a 2017 Subaru Outback for you to tow your trailer. We'll start with the hitch:
- Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13410
The reason I really like this hitch is because unlike other options, it does not require any drilling into the frame of your '17 Outback, and because it has a completely hidden design with only the hitch receiver showing. This hitch has 6,000 lb towing/400 lb tongue weight capacity (though please be sure to check the towing capacity of the Outback), but is not rated for use with a weight distribution system, which is the case for all hitches that fit a 2017 Outback.
For the trailer wiring, in order to add a 7-way so you can use a brake controller to control your trailer's electric brakes you'll need a 4-way and then a 7-way; the 4-way will plug into the 7-way and will control the lighting functions and the 7-way will be used for the brakes. Here is what you'll need:
- T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118467
- Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV # ETBC7
- Brake Controller: Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195
The P3 is great because it gives you the most consistently smooth braking, has a bright LCD screen that is very easy to read, and has continual diagnostic checks with safeguards to prevent battery drain or shorts. In regards to install, any local mechanic will be able to perform the install of the hitch and wiring without issue. You may just want to make a few calls to see who in your area has experience. The prices of each part can be found on their respective product pages.
