Weight Distribution and Sway Hitch for 2021 Grand Design Transcend 247BH Travel Trailer

Question:

Hi, I am about to take delivery of my new 2021 GDRV 247BH with a listed tongue weight from the factory of 546 lbs. I know with propane tanks filled, battery installed and the trailer loaded up I will likely be more in the 700lb range. This is my first travel trailer so I am just guessing at this number. I put the 247BH in as my vehicle on your website and the resulting Reese hitch was the 1200 lb tongue weight RP66084. I believe I will be at the lower end of the TW rating for this hitch of 600-1200lbs and based on my research I should try to fall in the middle of the range. It doesnt appear that there is a TW rating between the 800lb and the 1200lb for the dual cam system though. Im wondering will this hitch provide too rigid of a ride and potentially cause bending or damage to my trailer frame? It looks like equal-i-zer provides a 1000lb TW model but I cant seem to find it on your website. Im wondering if that may be a better option for me or if the 200 lb max tongue weight rating difference wont be noticeable to me. Im looking at the Reese dual cam based on a recommendation from a friend who has towed with one for years so am tending that way but the jump from 800lb to 1200lb is a bit concerning for me. Lastly, do you know if the install of either of these hitches will conflict with the propane tanks or any other frame members on the 247BH Thanks!

Your weight estimate will be close but probably a bit higher than the 700lb. Of course this is completely dependent on how you load your camper but the largest storage area is the front as well as the bedroom closets and under-bed storage.

The Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System # RP66084 is rated to work from 600lbs-1,200lbs of tongue weight. So it does fit in line with your 2021 Grand Design Transcend 247BH. I would recommend going with this hitch coming from an RV background as I see lots of people change campers frequently. This hitch will give you room to go larger if you desire to later.

If you feel more comfortable with something closer to your overall ratings the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System # RP66083 is rated at 400lbs-800lbs of tongue weight. But this will put your camper closer to the top of this hitch's weight rating.
