Can I Install A Cargo Box On My Roof That Is Longer Than My Crossbar Front Clearance?

Question:

If the front clearance needed for roof top cargo box is one inch longer than I have on my 09 Honda CR V with factory rails, can I use it anyways? Only with a hatch restriction? I need something long enough for skies. Will one inch really make that much difference?

You can mount a roof top cargo box that is slightly longer than the front clearance offered by your crossbars on your 2009 Honda CR-V, although it is not recommended due to the fact that the cargo box could interfere with the rear hatch.

With that being said, 1" will likely not cause any issues but it is still possible that it will hit your rear hatch when opened up. You can measure from the center of the front crossbar to the rear hatch seam and compare that to the measurements shown in the diagram I attached for you. The Thule Force XT L Rooftop Cargo Box - 16 cu ft - Black AeroSkin # TH6357B that you referenced has a front clearance of 47-1/2". Or you could go with the Thule Pulse Large Rooftop Cargo Box - 16 cu ft - Matte Black # TH615 which has the same 16 cu ft of cargo space but has a front clearance of 46-3/8". This cargo box can hold more skis/snowboards than the Force XT L.

The Pulse requires a crossbar spread of 23-5/8" - 34-3/8" while the Force XT L requires a crossbar spread of 23-5/8" - 33". Crossbar spread is the distance from the center of one crossbar to the center of the next crossbar. Another thing to keep in mind is that your crossbars must not be wider than 3-5/16" and no taller than 1-1/2" to use these cargo boxes. If you don't have crossbars on your roof that meet these requirements then I recommend going with a new setup such as Inno Aero Crossbars - Aluminum - Black - 51" Long - Qty 2
