Which Bike Rack Will Clear The Tailgate On A 2008 Honda Element?

Question:

Hello, the chinook looks like a great rack and more sturdy than the XC 2. Will it work with a honda element? My main concern is if the tailgate will go down with the rack on. The bikes do not have to be on it at this time. I just like to sit on my tailgate after a ride. Also do you recommend it in general for the element. Thank you for your time!

The Swagman Chinook Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Frame Mount # S64683 has a measurement of 12-1/2" from the trailer hitch pin hole to the closest part of the bike rack when folded/tilted down. You can measure from your trailer hitch pin hole to the rearmost part of the tailgate when folded down and if it is less than 12-1/2" you will likely be fine without any interference, but I cannot guarantee it since we haven't tested it on a 2008 Honda Element yet. You could add a hitch extender to make sure the bike rack will clear the tailgate; just keep in mind that using a hitch extender will reduce your hitch receiver's overall capacity by 50%. If you have a 1-1/4" hitch use Curt Hitch Extender for 1-1/4" Trailer Hitch Receivers - 7" Long # D189 and for 2" hitch use Trailer Hitch Extender for 2" Hitch Receivers - 8" Long # e88YR.

For a bike rack that will for sure clear your tailgate without the need for an adapter you could look into the Thule Apex Swing XT Bike Rack for 4 Bikes - 2" Hitches - Swinging # TH9027XT. While this is a higher priced bike rack, it is very handy to be able to swing the loaded bike carrier and gain access to the trunk or tailgate on your vehicle. I attached demonstration videos for you to check out.
