Initial Adjustment of Self-Adjusting Trailer Brake Assemblies

Question:

I bought 4 etrailer brand brake assemblies for the 2.5 K axle a couple of years ago. I didnt install them until recently. I have trouble with one wheel on the electric brakes locking up but the others do not. Your video says the most likely reason is adjustment. I have the self adjusting version and can adjust the brakes to full lock, but how do I back it off 10 clicks? the self adjusting mechanism would prevent the teeth from rotating back. How do I fix this?

To back the adjuster off, you'll need to use a small flat blade screwdriver or a similar tool to lift the clip that sits in the teeth of the adjuster wheel. With the clip lifted out of the way, you can use another screwdriver (a # W80630 adjuster spoon is easier to use).

You can also automatically adjust the brakes if you have a large empty parking lot nearby. Accelerate up to about 20 mph and apply the brakes firmly. You'll need to do this several times, as each time the brakes will adjust a bit each time the brakes are applied. After 15-20 braking events, the brake should be properly adjusted.
