I have a solution for you, but the only roof rack confirmed to fit your 2000 Volkswagen GTI is the SeaSucker Monkey Bars Roof Rack # 298-SX6000B. While I know this isn't the route you want to go, I will recommend a bike rack that would work with that round bar setup. You could add 1 or 2 of the Thule ProRide XT Roof Bike Rack # TH598004 which will attach to the SeaSucker Monkey Bars and allow you to mount your bike(s). While there are no other ways to safely haul a bike on your roof, I recommend looking into a trunk-mounted bike rack or hitch-mounted bike rack.
For the trunk rack you could use Thule Passage 2 Bike Carrier # TH910XT. This can hold 2 bikes weighing up to 35lbs each. While this works with most bikes, you may want to use Adapter Bar # RRRBCA021 for women's, children's or full-suspension bikes. For a hitch-mounted bike rack you could go with Swagman XC 2-Bike Rack # S64650 which fits 1-1/4" hitch receivers. This allows two bikes to be mounted and can fit bike tires up to 3.5" wide. The weight limit is 35lbs per bike. If you do not have a 1-1/4" hitch then you will need Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # C11066 which is confirmed to fit your vehicle.
I have attached demonstration videos for these products.
