Does Curt RV Trailer Hitch # 13703 Require a Support Strap

Question:

Warning: All non-trailer loads bike racks, cargo carriers, etc. applied to this product must be supported by auxiliary stabilizing straps. For use with RV-approved accessories only. Does this mean a nylon strap to secure the cargo tray? Can you just stretch one from each corner back to the bumper or do they need to go up on the back of the RV?

When using Curt Class I and II 1-1/4-inch trailer hitches and some Class III hitches, such as the Curt Adjustable Width RV Trailer Hitch # 13703 you referenced, you will need to use a stabilizer strap like the Curt Stabilizer Strap # 18050 on items such as bike racks, cargo carriers, etc., or else the warranty Curt provides will be voided. The Curt hitch features a 3500-lb GTW and a 350-lb tongue weight with side brackets that fit frames from 22- to 72-inches wide.

The purpose of the strap is to lessen the load on the trailer hitch by providing additional support to the bike rack, cargo carrier, etc. You can use the back of your RV to support the strap if you have a usable lip that will support it. I have provided links to the installation instructions for the Curt Trailer Hitch and to videos showing the typical installation of the hitch and a review of the strap.

This Curt hitch is the only hitch that requires the support strap to maintain the warranty. Another option for your RV is the Curt Adjustable Trailer Hitch Receiver with 2 Inch Drop # C13701. It is designed to fit frames 18 inches to 51 inches wide. I have provided a link for the installation instructions for this hitch.

Prior to installing a new hitch to your RV, be sure to check the owners guide to determine the proper GTW and tongue weight and to find a structurally safe location for attachment.
