Can You Add Trailer Brakes To A Trailer With 2200lb Axles

Question:

is it possible to get electric brakes for an auto-flex 2200 lb axle?

Expert Reply:

Absolutely!

If your auto-flex 2200 lb axle does not already have a 4-bolt brake mounting flange you would need to add one. Assuming that your axle is 1-3/4" diameter you would need the # 4-34. The brake mounting flange will need to be welded on by a professional as it needs to be welded perfectly square to the axle or you may experience abnormal tire wear or other braking issues.

Next you will need to confirm the inner and outer bearings your current hubs use. You can do this by removing one of the hubs and reading the bearing number stamped on the face of the bearing as shown in the included picture of the # L44649.

If your bearings are worn to the point that the bearings are not readable then you will need to use digital calipers like # PTW80157 to accurately measure your spindle according to the included diagram.

The only hub and drum assembly we offer for 2200lb axles is the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern # 8-173-16UC3-EZ which uses inner and outer bearing # L44649. This hub includes the bearings, races, grease seal, grease cap, and lug nuts needed for the install.

For compatible electric trailer brakes you would needed Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit # K23-103-104-00.

Lastly you will need a new trailer connector of which I recommend the Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box # HS381-9000 which gives you a junction box to make all of your wiring connections. You will also need # 12-1-1 to connect the brake magnets to the junction box using Heat Shrink Butt Connectors # DW05745-5 for a weather tight connection.

If you do not already have one you will also need a trailer brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 to control the trailer brakes, and your vehicle will need a functioning 7-way connector. If you can tell me the Year/Make/Model of your vehicle I would be happy to recommend a 7-way connector for you.

I included videos for all of the products mentioned and a link to a helpful article on adding electric trailer brakes for you to take a look at.
