Determining The Correct Weight Distribution System For 2014 Toyota 4Runner Towing Camper Trailer

Question:

I need a recommendation on which weight distribution hitch to use. I see the round bar and trunnion but I don’t know the difference. I am towing with a 2014 4runner that is lifted 2.5 front and 1.5 rear and will be towing a Braxton creek bushwhacked plus 15fk. Dry weight and empty is 1900lbs with a hitch weight of 260lbs. This is empty without camping gear loaded in. I will also be mounting bikes on the tongue which will increase the weight a little bit. Which weight distribution hitch should I be using? I’ve been looking at the fastway e2 style hitches but I am open for other suggestions also.

The difference between round bars and trunnion bars is mainly how they attach to the head of the weight distribution system. The round bars attach from underneath which means they have slightly less ground clearance, and some people believe they are weaker due to the bar bending. In all honestly both systems are fine, but we have found the trunnion bars to be easier to install and since they also offer slightly more ground clearance they are what we typically recommend.

With that said you have a great system in mind, as the Fastway systems are fantastic for the money. Since the dry trailer tongue weight is around 260lbs, and you will be adding a bike rack to the tongue as well I have an idea of which weight system will be best for you but you will want to confirm your total tongue weight first.

To do this you will need to measure the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to tow trailer, and also add the weight of any cargo added behind the rear axle of your 2014 Toyota 4Runner. The easiest way to measure your tongue weight is using a tongue weight scale like the # e99044, but there are also other ways as you can see in the included article on measuring your tongue weight

I recommend the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Trunnion - 8,000 lbs GTW, 800 lbs TW # FA92-00-0800 which works with total tongue weights from 400-800lbs which I would guess you will be around the 600lb range when you are all loaded up which would be perfect for this system. The Fastway # FA92-00-0800 does not include a hitch ball so you will need 2" hitch ball # A-90 or 2-5/16" hitch ball # 63840 depending on the coupler on your trailer.

I included videos for the products mentioned, and a few helpful articles on weight distribution systems for you to take a look at.
