Trailer Hitch and Trailer Wiring Harness Recommendation for 2004 GMC Sierra
Question:
Hello. I am interested in knowing about Item # e98849. I have a 2004 GMC Sierra, 4.3 6 cyl engine. I am interested in occasionally towing a small trailer approx. 5X8 with camping equipment, a riding law tractor, and an occasional load of wood. I am just wondering about the weight capacity of this product, as I am not sure of the various numbers given and what they mean. Also, I do not have the plug in for the trailer lights on my bumper. Can you advise?

The etrailer brand Class III hitch you mentioned, part # e98849 is a confirmed fit for your 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 or 2500LD.
The hitch has a 6000 lb towing capacity or a 600 lb tongue weight capacity. The tongue weight capacity reprents the maximum amount of downward force from a trailer tongue that the hitch can safely handle.
If used with weight distribution, the capacities rise to 10000 lbs towing/1000 lbs tongue weight, but keep in mind, this the the capacity of the hitch, which would be limited by the towing capacity of the truck if the towing capacity is lower. I'll link you to an article that fully explains how weight distribution systems work.
Given your planned use of the hitch, the # e98849 would work perfectly.
To equip your truck with a trailer connector to control the lighting functions on a trailer, use part # HM40975 which will plug into the round US Car connector clipped to the cross member above the spare tire, as shown in the linked video. This connector provides both a 4 pole and a 7-way trailer connector as well as a mounting bracket.
