Possible Causes for a Yoke Style Hitch Coupler to Bind

My Boy Scout troop purchased a previously owned trailer last year. It has a yoke style hitch coupler. Apparently some of the leaders have had problems getting the coupler to release from the hitch ball. Ive looked at the coupler and cant see anything obviously in need of repair. This specific coupler appears to accept a 2-inch ball and thats what has been used in the past. If the receiver is too high or too low and causing the trailer tongue not to be level with the road would that be a possible binding cause? Are there any other tell-tale signs to look for that would indicate the coupler latch should be replaced? Thank you for your assistance.

As a first step I suggest you try using a lithium grease to lubricate the moving parts; you could try a grease such as part # L11316, LubriMatic, Multipurpose Lithium Grease - 16-oz Tub.
Since the trailer in question has been used by a previous owner there is always the chance that there could be hidden wear on the internal components. Even in normal use these parts can wear and eventually need to be replaced. If an under-sized hitch ball was used (such as a 1-7/8 inch ball in a 2-inch coupler) it might have led to accelerated wear due to the increased play that would result from the mismatched sizes. Also, as you noted, if the trailer tongue was consistently out-of-level during towing this too could have put additional stress on the internal components, possibly causing the coupler to wear and therefore to bind.
If the lubrication effort fails, your best bet is to re-confirm the make and model of the coupler and the ball size indicated on the coupler. There should be an indication stamped on the coupler as to the correct size ball to be used. If it is indeed a 2-inch coupler, then the part you have identified, Atwood Latch Repair Kit for 2-Inch Yoke Style Couplers, part CP02-010, is the correct repair kit. Since it sounds as though multiple vehicles may be towing this trailer, a good long-term fix might be an adjustable ball mount, which allows for some height adjustment between the tow vehicle and trailer.
