Tie Down Solution for Corvette on Open Car Hauler

Question:

I just bought a brand new 18’ open car hauler with the intention to trailer my new Corvette from event to event around the country. I am looking for the best set up to secure my car to my trailer. The wheels and tires on the new Corvettes are very wide, especially in the rear. What is your recommendation for the best way to go? (Additional Information: - Tire Sizes - 245/35ZR-19 at the front and 305/30ZR-20 at the rear. Vehicle weight 3,600 lbs. No etrack system.)

This question is refined by several decisions. What will you use for tie down points on the Corvette? What will you use for tie down points on the trailer? How easy do you want it to be. Finally, what looks good.

If you are OK with climbing under your car each time to hook into the car and then connect to the edge of the trailer, you can simply use the QuickLoader # Q64FR ratchet straps. You will need to consult your Owner's Manual or Manufacturer for appropriate tie down locations under the car. I am not enthusiastic about this option as the straps need to run out at angles and your body and fascia panels are near the ground and could be rubbed.

A better solution is a strap that attaches to the tire and wheel, like the Bulldog # BDW20362 which has hooks at each end to connect to tie down anchors like the Brophy # DR01, or the etrailer RRING-Q6000 . This solution only best supports one loading position, especially since your car rides so low – the rings will need to be mounted on the trailer right at the expected wheel locations.

By far the best solution would be to install an E-track system from front to back and to use wheel straps made for an E-track system. This will be quick to load and unload, and give you the greatest flexibility for different loading positions. E-Track comes in 3 foot, 5 foot, and 8 foot sections with either black powder coated or galvanized steel depending on your preference.

For black E-Tracks in 3- foot use # e75VR . For 5-foot use # e92VR, For 8-foot use e52VR.
For galvanized E-Tracks in 3-foot use # e35VR. For 5-foot use # e45VR . For 8-foot use e62VR .

For wheel tie downs that will fit your Corvette I recommend using four Erickson # EM58523 tie down straps which are perfect for low riding vehicles with wide tires. (You will need 4 due to the weight of your vehicle.) Most users also purchase the Erickson # EM09162-2 pair of wheel chocks to easily park in the exact spot each time.

Finally, since you are getting your trailer outfitted for car hauling, take a look at the Buyers Products # 3371701680 storage box. This is an excellent place to store tie down straps, chains, or even your cleaning supplies and car cover.

I have included links for each of these products and some video reviews.
