Fitting the Malone DownLoader Kayak Carrier on Factory Crossbars of a 2021 Subaru Outback Wagon

Question:

I have two sets of the Malone MPG114 kayak carrier and downloaders an $800 investment. I installed the carriers on the 2021 Outback. Theres a lot of play/jiggle once the carriers are socked down. The Outback factory installed crossbars are 2 inches wide and are flat. They dont meshfoot well where the carriers make contact with the crossbars. Its plastic to plastic and the carriers list and jiggle. Is this safe, are the carriers secure?

It's best for there to be no play or jiggle with a kayak carrier, so I understand your worry.

The Malone DownLoader Kayak Carrier, part # MPG114MD, is designed to be compatible with a number of crossbar styles, including factory bars. To accommodate such a wide variety of bars, Malone included two sets of bolts for mounting.

The shorter set (the 60mm bolts) are for thinner bars, which it sounds like your 2021 Subaru Outback Wagon's factory bars are. Try using these to get a better grip on the bars.

If you see that the connection is still not tight enough to keep everything secure, try using shorter (50mm bolts) from your local hardware store.
