License Plate Holder For License Plate Holder For Bicycle Rack on Back of Vehicle

Question:

Im looking at the Yakima Holdup Two bike rack. In the pictures, it looks like when you have no bikes on the rack, and the rack is folded up to fit compactly near the back of the car platforms vertical, it obstructs the view of the license plate. I am wondering if I might get pulled over when driving around town if the police are unable to see my license plate. I searched for answers to this question on your website, but did not see any posts, so maybe the police do not consider it an issue. Also what is the maximum wheel base that the platforms can accommodate?

I will take the easy question first. The Yakima # Y02443 bike rack adjusts to a maximum bicycle wheelbase of 47-3/4", and this is typical of most racks.

Regarding an obstructed license plate. In most every state the law reads that your vehicle license plate must not be obscured, even partially. Other than in the state of Utah, no exception is made for bike racks. On the other hand you never hear about anyone being ticketed.

If you are concerned, you might consider just attaching your plate to the crossbar of the back bike with a cable tie.
