Troubleshooting Weak Electric Trailer Brakes
Question:
my trailer is hooked to a peterbilt tractor. I can not get my trailer brakes to lock up they slow down vehicle but will not lock them up. could it be because I used smaller wire than was required and it wont carry proper current

Using too small of wire to carry the brake circuit can cause a number of problems ranging from poor brake performance to the wires melting.
I would recommend you replace your current wiring with the recommended gauge wire. We typically recommend 10 gauge wire.
You should note that locking up trailer wheels is not an effective way to slow down a trailer. You would want your trailer brakes to brake hard enough that they would almost lock up but never lock up.
There are several other reasons why your brakes might not be strong enough, your brakes may be out of adjustment, your trailer may be overloaded, your brake magnets may be worn. Check out the video I attached, at the 4:50 mark you can see how to adjust brakes.
