Availability of 1 Inch Diameter Trailer Spindle To Fit on 1.25 Square Axle

Question:

Current spindles are 1inch diameter mounted into a 1.25 inch square axle. Is item TRU97FR—1inch spindle to 1.50inch square—your closest match and what I need for spindle replacement? Can a welder fill that quarter-inch void easily and safely enough? Thanks.

The two spindles that I have to fit a square axle are designed with a square stub diameter of 1.50 inches. The TruRyde BT8 Spindle 1-1/2" Square # TRU97FR, you have referenced is for 2,000-lb axles and the TruRyde Spindle, part # TRU47FR, is for 3,500-lb axles. They use different bearings and seals.

I am including a link to a product page that will list the dimensions on the trailer spindles we have available.

Square axles can be tough to determine capacity. Often times the same spindle fits a range of axle capacities. The most common place to find axle capacity is on a plate or sticker on the trailer frame on or near the tongue. If there is no plate or sticker on the trailer I would recommend to get the inner and outer bearing numbers stamped into the metal of the bearings. Going by those numbers, wheel size, and bolt pattern, we can determine the probable axle capacity.

To replace a spindle, the old one would need to be cut off, and the new one welded into place. This is NOT a job for the do-it-yourselfer. The new spindle must be absolutely square with the axle in order to prevent premature tire wear and wheel tracking problems. I would recommend finding a welder who is experienced with trailer axles and find out from him if you would be able to use the 1.50 inch stub spindle on your 1.25 inch square axle. Your local RV dealer or repair facility could probably refer you to a welder.

I am looking for tie plate kit for a 1.25" square axle but I can't find anything smaller than 1.5". The current set up uses 1 tie that goes across the axle diagonally.

Unfortunately we don't have any U-bolt kits available that are designed for square axles smaller than 1-1/2". You might try a local trailer shop or trailer/RV dealer if you have any around.
