Recommendations on Installing RoadMaster EZ Base Plate # 521181-5 on 2012 Scion xD

Question:

When installing the base plate does any of the front grill etc need to be permanently removed in order to complete installation? Cutting out portions and disposing of materials or does in come directly through the grill area?

After consulting my source at Roadmaster, I found that for the installation of the RoadMaster EZ Base Plate Kit # 521181-5 for your 2012 Scion xD, trimming of the spoiler, air dam, grille, or plastic fascia may be required and trimming of the lower air dam, air deflector, cowling and/or rock guard is required.

The instructions for proper installation of # 521181-5 are linked. They are very detailed and show all the modifications that are required on your 2012 Scion xD.

If you are looking for recommendations on the proper flat towing of your 2012 Scion xD, there are 5 basic components needed for this operation: Tow Bar, Base Plate Kit, Safety Cables, Tow Bar Wiring, and Supplemental Braking System. All of this information can be found on our FAQ page that provides an overview of how to properly tow your vehicle and I have included a link to that page.

Since you already have an idea of the base plate you would like to use, lets look at the tow bar. I recommend the RoadMaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar # RM-520 which offers a quick-disconnect system that lets you quickly and easily mount and remove the tow bar on your own. I have included a link to the instruction guide for the proper installation of this product as well as a review video.

For your safety cables, I recommend the RoadMaster 68 inch Single Hook Coiled Safety Cables # RM-643. They offer extra security for your tow system with aircraft-type galvanized steel construction offering superior strength. The coiled design keeps the cables off the ground and are used to keep the vehicle from being disconnected from the tow vehicle.

Most states require a supplemental braking system when towing a vehicle, so I recommend the RoadMaster Even Brake Portable Proportional Braking System # RM-9400. Its inertia-activated proportional braking not only means quicker and safer stops, but less wear and tear on both the towed vehicle's and tow vehicles brakes. I have linked to an FAQ page going into further detail on what a supplemental braking system is and how it makes flat towing your vehicle easier.

Finally, you will need a wiring system that provides proper lighting for your 2012 Scion xD when it is being towed. If you do not plan on towing your vehicle frequently, I recommend the RoadMaster Magnetic Tow Lights # RM-2120. These are magnetic two lights that are the quick and easy way to connect your towed car's electrical system to your tow vehicles. The system is self-contained and requires no splicing into the towed vehicles electrical system.

If you do plan frequent towing, I recommend the RoadMaster Tail Light Wiring Kit # RM-155. It is a bulb-and-socket system that works via independent plugs and sockets mounted inside the tail lights. This self-contained wiring kit bypasses your vehicles electrical system, eliminating any concerns over violating the manufacturers warranty.

There are many options to choose from, so I have included our FAQ page on the various methods of wiring. The page explains the benefits of each type as well as examples so you can decide what works best for you.
