Question:
I have a silly trailer with 4.8x 12 wheel on 4 lugs. How do I upgrade to a 14 in wheel and tire?

To upgrade to a 14 inch wheel, you will obviously need new wheels and tires. I recommend the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire with 14" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM32153 for a great quality radial tire that will serve you well for street and highway travel. All 14 inch wheels we carry have the 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern, so you will need to replace your current hubs to upgrade to this size.
To determine the correct hubs, you will need to match your bearing numbers from your current hub. There are a couple of options to get the numbers we need. The first option is to remove the hub, get the bearing number off the face of the outer bearing and then take the seal off the back and pull out the inner bearing to get the number off the face of that bearing as well. With those numbers we can determine the bearings needed to match a hub to your spindle with the new bolt pattern.
The second option is to remove the hub and use a digital caliper like # PTW80157 to measure the axle spindle in the locations where the outer bearing, inner bearing, and grease seal ride. These are precise measurements and I've attached a video and a photo to assist.
With either the bearing numbers or the measurements we can help you get the right hubs for your tire upgrade as long as you don't have an extremely odd spindle size. You will also want to pay attention to the difference in tire diameter from your current tires and account for the suspension travel clearance needed of about 4 inches from the top of the new tire.
