Can I run a brake controller with a 4 way?

A brake controller does require a 7-way in order to be functional; the 7-way has the necessary wiring for powering the controller and transferring the brake output, which is why it is needed.
For your 2016 Dodge Durango, which already has a 4-way - or if you need to add one - like the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118617, to add a brake controller you will need to add a 7-way with the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7.
Then, for a budget-friendly but cost-effective and quality brake controller I recommend the Brake EVN # TK63VR; to install it in your Durango you will also need the Harness # 20127.
