Can A Motorcycle Be Carried on the Back of a 2016 Lexus RX 350

Question:

Hi there, Im looking to understand the true numbers for a possible set up. I have a 2016 Lexus RX350. I have a class 3 hitch that is rated for up to 600lbs of tongue weight. My vehicle is rated to 350lbs tongue weight. I would be loading a 250lb dirt bike onto the carrier. The carrier is about 50lbs so that is 300lbs total. This seems like it should work. However, generally the tongue weight capacity of a class 3 hitch would be based on where the ball would typically be if you were towing a trailer. So with a carrier like this where it is extended possibly twice as far as the receiver ball would be, what effect does this have on the numbers above? Does it mean my hitch is no longer good for 600lbs and is likely good for only 300lbs? Does this affect the vehicle tongue weight capacity? Having the carrier extended further back must reduce the amounts somewhere so I am wondering where that affect takes place. Thanks

The tongue and towing weight capacity will always be limited by the lowest rated competent. The trailer hitches are tested independently of the vehicle so they are usually rated much higher but if the vehicle is lower that is the figure you must abide by. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13272 for example has a 600 lb tongue weigh rating but if the vehicle is only rated for 350 lbs that is the total tongue weight capacity you must abide by.

In regards to leverage, you are correct in that the further back the load is suspended the lower the weight capacity will be. However, this will already be factored into the carrier so it's not something you have to use any sort of formula to determine yourself. The Ultra-Fab Dirt Bike Carrier part # UF48-979033 is the lightest option we have at 50 lbs and it has a 500 lb weight capacity so as long as you stay under this you will be good to go.
