Can a Trunk Mounted Bike Rack Be Used on a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander

Question:

I am trying to find a compatible trunk mount bike rack for a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander. Ive heard that not a single trunk mount rack will fit this vehicle which seems utterly ridiculous. Thanks.

What you have heard is correct, none of the rack manufacturers recommend using a trunk mounted bike rack on your vehicle. In order for the top connecting straps to fasten to the top of the liftgate, they must pass over the spoiler at the top of the liftgate. The manufacturers have found that this spoiler is not strong enough to bear the weight of the rack plus the bikes loaded onto it. Attempting to install and use a trunk mount rack on the 2007 Outlander would most likely result in the spoiler being deformed or damaged.

Installing a hitch like the Curt # 13581 and using it as an attachment point for a hitch mounted bike rack will be your best alternative for carrying bikes with your vehicle. I think you'll find the Thule Hitching Post Pro bike rack, part # TH934XTR an all-around good choice. Another good option for frequent use is the Swagman Trailhead, part # S63360. The Trailhead uses sturdy rubber straps to retain the bikes to the rack, and anti-sway cradles that prevent the bikes from swaying back and forth and striking each other or the rear of your vehicle.

I have linked you to the products I recommended, as well as some product demonstration and installation videos.
