Can A 1-1/4" to 2" Hitch Be Used To Attach A Bike Rack To a Vehicle

Question:

I have a 2006 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport. I have a bike rack for a 2 receiver at about 30lbs that will carry 1 bike at about 32lbs. my hitch receiver is 1-1/4. Is there a problem using a 1-1/4 to 2 receiver adapter?

Helpful Expert Reply:

The use of a trailer expander, the Brophy Hitch Expander part # HT5R or part # HTAD for example will reduce the weight capacity of the trailer hitch on the vehicle by 50%. Therefore, if the weight of the bike rack and bikes is less than half of the trailer hitch's capacity you will be good to go. I suspect for a combined weight of around 60 lbs you will be well within the range of the trailer hitch so odds are you will be just fine with the above adapter.
