How to Tow a Small Dirt Bike Trailer with my 2012 Subaru Impreza 5 Door Sport
Question:
Hello, I am trying to get a hitch, wiring, and a trailer to be able to haul a Dirt bike. I am new to this so from my understanding due to the low tongue weight associated with the class 1 hitches I cannot just use one of the hitch mounted racks and would need a trailer. Is this correct? Also if I do need to hail a trailer and get these parts what would you recommend? It looks like I can use the easier to install 1 1/4 Curt hitches and buy a trailer. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!!

To get your motorcyle to your destination your are going to need to tow it rather than carry it. You are correct that the hitches and your vehicle can't support that kind of tongue weight. I have a complete set up for you that will get you to your spot no problems.
Start with a hitch, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11286 is a custom fit for your Impreza and has a 200 lb tongue weight rating with a 2000 lb gross trailer weight rating so that is more than enough for your trailer and bike. Just remember not to exceed what your owners manual says weight wise.
Then you will need wiring. Use the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 118573 it will give you the 4 way flat connector most small trailers use. This one in particular is very dependable and reliable especially on rougher road which you may well encounter going out riding.
Next you need a way to attach the trailer to the hitch so use one of the approved ballm ounts from Curt which are part # C45521, part # C45571 or part # C45572 use the 2" Hitch Ball part # 19258 attached to it to connect your trailer. 2" is the most common but if the trailer comes with an 1 7/8" ball use part # 19257.
These are all easy installations and can be done at home with simple hand tools. Overall time should be 2-4 hours depending on skill level and breaks but not a big complicated situation at all. I've linked the instructions for these below for you to check out.
