Troubleshooting Running Lights Issue During 7 Way Connector Install on 2018 Ford Explorer
Question:
I purchased and installed this 7 pin trailer harness on my 2018 Ford explorer 2WD. I double checked my wire color connection the colors on the back of the receiver plug are different from the instructions I have turn and brake lights, backup lights, and battery power but no running lights on the trailer plug. I couldnt find any fuses labeled running lights. Is there another connection or splice since my vehicle was not originally ordered with a towing package? No power to the brown wire #3 terminal when the car lights are on.

It sounds like you're having an issue with the installation of the 7 way connector that came with the Curt # C56306, and we can absolutely help you get this resolved.
I'll start off by saying that the wiring colors are going to be a general guide and not every vehicle manufacturer uses the same colors of wires, but since this is a plug and play harness the colors on the vehicle won't matter and you should have the correct connection coming from the plug. Since this is a new installation I recommend starting by testing the wire behind the 7 way plug; it's entirely possible that you just need to reinstall that brown wire more securely into the back of the 7 way socket. You'll want to make sure that when your lights are turned on, that brown wire is receiving power. You can test your wiring with a circuit tester like the # PTW2993. If you're getting power on that wire, you just need to get a more secure connection in the socket of your 7 way.
If that wire is not receiving power when your 2018 Ford Explorer's lights are turned on, the issue is going to be on the vehicle. I would start by checking fuse #99 in the engine compartment power distribution box, which is the trailer towing parking lamps relay. Make sure that this fuse is in place and not blown.
If you check these two issues and your lights still aren't working, please let me know so I can give you the next couple of items to check out. I've also linked one of our helpful articles on 7 way connector wiring which has some tips and wiring diagrams for 7 way connectors that you may find helpful.
