Equipping 2020 Subaru Outback with Brake Controller and Pop Up Camper With Brakes

Question:

Hi - we have a 2020 Outback. I just took delivery of a Curt hitch and the corresponding 4 way wiring harness that I ordered from you. Once I get that installed I want to add electric brakes to our 1995 Coleman Sun Valley. It has blue wiring run to the axel and mounts. Can you advise on the necessary parts to add the brake and a controller?

On the vehicle side, you'll need to choose a brake controller. I'd recommend the Tekonsha Primus, part # TK90160 because it's easy to use and set up. It's a proportional controller, which means that the the amount of voltage sent to the brakes increases according to how quickly the tow vehicle is coming to a stop. To install the controller, you'll need our Brake controller installation kit, part # ETBC7.

How to proceed from here will depend on how the pop up is equipped. Since you say that the camper is already wired for brakes, you'll need a 7-way trailer connector on the pop up if it doesn't already have one. I really like the 7-way/junction box combos like # HS381-9000. This provides for neat and orderly installation with all the connections easily accessible in one place and protected from the weather. To add brakes, you'll want to ensure that the axle has the brake mounting flanges installed directly behind the hubs. The flange will be square with 4 bolt holes, one in each corner. In order to recommend the correct hub/drum and brake assembly, I'll need to know the reference numbers listed on the inner and outer wheel bearings. If you can get back to me with that information, I'd be happy to recommend a hub/drum and brake assemblies.

I've linked to some articles that you'll find helpful, including one that goes into the processes and parts needed for adding brakes to a trailer.
