Charging Battery on 2005 Jeep While Being Towed Behind Motorhome
Question:
I want to install a stay and play braking system but concerned about draining the Jeeps battery while under tow. My wiring from motorhome to my toad is a 7 wire to a 4 way flat connector. How could I obtain power for a towed battery charger? Would there be ample power from tail lights being I always drive with my headlights on? Or am I forced to rewire everything?

In order to get power from your motorhome to your 2005 Jeep while you're flat towing you'll need a working 7 way with 12 volts. Since the front of your Jeep has a 4 way flat on it you will need to change out the plug because all 4 wires are being used. The tail light circuit won't have enough power to charge the battery and run the lights on your Jeep, however you won't be forced to rewire everything, just the plug on the front of the Jeep.
If you don't have 12V at the back of the 7 way on your motorhome, you'll need the theRoadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit for Motorhomes # RM-156-75. It hooks to the battery on your motorhome and the 7 way, and provides up to 15 amps to charge your Jeep's battery.
If your tow bar does not have channels for the safety cables and wiring to route through I recommend Roadmaster 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Kit # RM-146-7. This is a 7 to 6 way coiled cable, and it has the vehicle side connector and bracket.
If your tow bar does have channels I recommend Roadmaster 7-Wire to 6-Wire Straight Cord Kit # RM-98146-7. It's has the same components however this cable is straight so it fits into the channel on the tow bar to keep from dragging the ground.
Something to keep in mind is how you wire the connector on your Jeep, it has to match the 7 way on your motorhome. I included a diagram of how the connector should be wired for the Roadmaster cables, but the terminals are labeled on the back.
Once the 6 way connector is on the front of your Jeep the Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-156-25 can be connected to it and the battery This is the easiest most convenient way to make sure your battery is charged while you're towing. There's no extra steps when you're hooking up to tow, your coach will automatically charge the battery if the cable for your lights is hooked up and you're towing.
I linked all the parts and attached a few videos of different year Jeeps we've had in the shop. The installation process is the same for your Jeep though.
