Can Weight Distribution or Sway Control be Used on 2019 Volkswagen Atlas

Are you sure you can use a weight distribution system on an Atlas? Other forums and the owners manual says thats a no-no because the hitch is not designed to handle a weight distribution system. Can you please confirm? I would hope you could...

The owner's manual for a 2019 Volkswagen Atlas does say not to use a "weight distributing or load equalizing hitch" and this is strictly a Volkswagen stance. It also says things like "when you are not towing, remove the trailer hitch" (which, frankly, is absurd) and to remove the ball mount to reduce the risk of injury to pedestrians (which would be the first ball mount related injury I can think of). This likely has more to do with Volkswagen and their reputation for safety; weight distribution is often incorrectly associated with towing higher capacities so that might be the reason for their stance.

Having said all that, since that stance is in the owner's manual you can avoid a weight distribution hitch but get the benefits of sway control with the the Reese Friction Sway Control Kit # 83660 which is not something that is going to have any restrictions.

This kit will provide you with the benefits of a more relaxed ride because you won't experience the sway you otherwise would without it; you would only need the Reese Sway-Control Bracket for 2" Ball Mounts # RP26003 to attach to your ball mount to use with the kit. To complete the towing set up on your 2019 Volkswagen Atlas you will also need a trailer hitch and wiring:
