How To Test a Brake Controller That Wont Activate Until Trailer Is Plugged In
Question:
I like to check brake controller, but it does not activate until trailer is plugged in.Is it possible to make the controller think that the plug is plugged in so as to check the controller and the 7 blade brake control wire to make sure it works correctly before I pick up the trailer?

Expert Reply:
The 7 Way Trailer Connector Vehicle Tester part # C73NR can emulate a trailer so this should then trick the brake controller into thinking a trailer is connected therefore you can test the brake controller. There is actually a light on the tester that lets you know when a brake signal is being sent as well as letting you know if all the trailer lights are working.
If you have a test light, you should still be able to still probe the brake output pin on the trailer connector to test for power just be sure you are using the manual override and not the brake pedal, especially if it is a proportional brake controller.
