Why Do Trailer Wiring Harnesses for 2020 Toyota Tacoma Require Power Wire to Battery

Question:

Hi, Since I need to run a wire to the battery anyway .... would it make sense to use the next higher pin trailer cable to allow 12v to be accessible at the rear of the vehicle/+ Trailer ??? I could then use an adapter to put the plug back to flat wire when needed. If So, What higher pin wiring harness would you recommend ??? Thanks !!!

The available trailer wiring harness for your 2020 Toyota Tacoma, is the Curt T-Connector # C56349 you were looking at (which would also be my recommendation), do require that a hot lead be ran up to the battery for power. As you mentioned in your question, there are many vehicles that don't require this connection but there are just as many (if not more) that do.

While I can't say for certain what the particular difference is between your previous model vehicles and your new 2020 Toyota Tacoma with regards to the wiring, I can say that typically when a hot lead is required it's because the factory tail light circuits just don't provide enough power on their own to reliably take on the responsibility of the trailer lights as well. Connecting directly to the tail light circuits for power, instead of running the 12V wire to the battery, could result in blown fuses or more significant damage on the truck.

I have attached an installation video below on the 2017 Tacoma that you can follow along with. The process should be almost identical on your 2020 model.

That is a really good question. You can certainly upgrade the 4-Way to a connector with a 12V circuit since you are already running wiring up to the battery for the 4-Way harness. To do this I think your best option is with the Wiring Kit # ETBC7L, which will actually plug into the 4-Way connector from the Tekonsha harness mentioned above to provide you with a 7-Way (and 4-Way still) at the other end. It includes the wiring needed to activate that 12V circuit that you can then use for various accessories or to maintain the charge on a trailer mounted battery. I have attached a short video demonstration on this kit below, along with the written installation manual that you can look through.
