Trailer Brakes Do Not Lock Up When Brake Controller Is At Max Settings on 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe

Question:

Vehicle: 2010 Hyundai Sante Fe W/Tow Package Controller: Tekonsha P2 Trailer: New 2013 Forest River R Pod 177 W/single axle electric brakes Problem: At maximum controller setting brakes do not get anywhere near a lock up. Is this normal? Is is possible that electric brakes on the trailer need adjusting? How do I get more bite back there? Advice appreciated. Thanks!

If the brake controller seems to be operating correctly, then it is possible that the brakes on your trailer need to be adjusted. If you have manual adjust brakes, then you will need to rotate an adjustment dial inside of the brake assemblies at the bottom just under the magnet. The brake shoes could not be close enough to the drum.

To ensure the brakes are properly adjusted, you will want to turn the adjustment dial until you cannot rotate the hub and then back off about 10 clicks. I have attached a video of our installation technician adjusting electric brakes on a trailer for you to check out. You will want to start at the 4 minute and 50 second mark.

I would also recommend checking the ground connections to make sure they are not loose and check the trailer connector at the trailer and vehicle for any possible corrosion.

Keep in mind that you do not want your brakes to lock up, even under extreme braking. When you are adjusting the brakes, they should work better, but not lock up, even on max settings.
