Installing Electric Brake Controls on a 2010-2014 Dodge Ram
Replacing a Factory Brake Controller with an Aftermarket Brake Controller On a 2010-2014 Dodge Ram
Technical Bulletin
SUMMARY: 2010-2014 Dodge Ram With Factory Integrated Trailer Brake Module (ITBM)PROBLEM: The Dodge factory ITBM (Integrated Trailer Brake Module) is not to be used with electric over hydraulic trailer brake systems. It is to be used with electric trailer brakes only.SOLUTION: To use a trailer with electric over hydraulic brakes, you will need to install an aftermarket brake control. To install an aftermarket brake control you will have to disconnect the ITBM. This will turn on a warning lamp on the instrument cluster. In order to disconnect the ITBM and not get the warning lamp, your local Dodge dealer will have to reconfigure the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module), of the truck. Once the TIPM has been reconfigured, and the ITBM has been unplugged, you can use a vehicle specific brake control harness such as the Tekonsha #3021P or Towready #22293, to install the aftermarket brake control. To disconnect the ITBM, you will need to contact Business Center to remove the sales code (XHC). The TIPM will need to be reconfigured. Once the sales code has been disabled you can disconnect the ITBM electrical connector, under the dash, without getting the warning lamp.

I have a question on a 2010 dodge ram 3500 that has a factory brake controller (itbm) that was install at factory as listed options list on truck from build date. I might be miss reading these instructions but reconfiguring the tipm, im guessing you mean removing the itbm from the options list? sales code xhc. Im kind of only seeing this as a possibly if this was a dealer install and was added to the option list by a dealership, with it being a factory build option we cant remove this from the option list. Is this correct or are we missing something.
If you want to remove the factory brake controller without causing a code you need to take it to a dealer and have them clear it our and disconnect it. Then you can install a brake controller that will work with other styles of brakes, not just electric.
The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. I attached a picture that shows what it looks like. I also attached installation instructions for the Tekonsha…
The factory brake controller in your 2011 Dodge Ram 3500 is not compatible with the HydraStar Electric-Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes #HBA16 that you referenced. There is no adapter available that would make it work either. Your only option would…
It sounds like there is something very wrong with your Tekonsha P3, part #90195. There are some troubleshooting diagnostics available with the unit, which can be accessed by pressing the menu button, selecting Help, pressing the menu button again,…
That has to be a brake controller issue. Sounds like the controller is backfeeding the stoplight circuit it taps into as a signal wire with voltage which is then activating your brake lights. When this happens the brake controller is in need of being…
The Tekonsha P3 does send a diagnostic signal to detect if there is a trailer connected. As you mentioned this may be indicating another problem, and I recommend checking in out. I have spoken with my contacts at Tekonsha about your particular issue…
I have attached a diagram that shows how the Dexter Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator, part #K71-651 needs to be wired. You may want to check the wiring to make sure it is wired correctly and none of the wires show any signs of damage. Make sure…
The Prodigy brake controller that I would recommend is the P3 Brake Controller, #90195. This brake controller has an LCD display that will display actual issues rather than codes if an issue were to arise. You can also use the Plug-In Wiring Adapter,…
Yes if you installed the Prodigy P3 brake controller part #90195 in your 2016 Ram 3500 it would totally bypass the integrated one you have. You will need the install harness part #3024-P as well. To install an aftermarket brake controller on a 2016…
Your Hydrastar actuator is not cycling on to build pressure to apply the brakes when needed. This could mean that there is an electrical problem or a malfunction with the motor, or even a problem with the brake controller. I have included a picture…
Yes. The Integrated Trailer Brake Module (ITBM) will need to be disconnected by your local Ram dealer to allow your 2018 Ram 2500 Diesel to use an aftermarket trailer brake controller. If you don't have a controller, I recommend the Tekonsha…
With one exception, you will need to see your local Ram dealer to reconfigure the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) on your 2012 Ram 1500 to install an aftermarket brake controller. The exception is the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller…
Your Hydrastar actuator is not cycling on to build pressure to apply the brakes when needed. This could mean that there is an electrical problem or a malfunction with the motor, or even a problem with the brake controller You have stated that there…
