Brake Controller Wont Power Unless Brake Pedal is Pressed on 2000 GMC Sierra 1500

Question:

I bought a Hopkins e- brake controller and adapter plug to go to my factory installed tow package in my 2000 Gmc Sierra 1500 4×4 z71. Only get power to my elct. brakes when I step on the brakes but they are on full, no light on controller as per manuf.. No adjusting the leveld and no light on when brakes applied however with brake pedal applied we tested for power and there was no light. Tried another new controller, same brand and model, same result!! Brakes on full but cannot control manually or set sensitivity?? Everything is hooked up the way the instructions say but no power coming in to controller till brake applied, no light but full brakes on trailer. Im confused!# is there some wire location change I have to make at junction box or at controller connectors??

Since your 2001 GMC Sierra came with a factory installed 7-way trailer connector, GM should have already completed the connections under the hood at the fuse box. However, we have found that GM did not complete the wiring on all trucks, even if they came with the factory trailer wiring.

If you plug in your brake controller using a plug-in style wiring harness, like part # 3025-S, and the brake controller does not power on then the wiring under the hood must be completed. I would also take this opportunity to make sure that you have the correct wiring harness for your vehicle.

I have attached an installation video as well as one of our help articles on how to install a brake controller on your truck. You will want to follow steps 1 and 2 under the section titled Vehicles without Factory Installed 7-way. To complete the installation, you may need a 30-amp fuse and a 40-amp fuse if they are not already present in the fuse box for power to the brake controller and power to the 7-way trailer connector.
