Why are the Rise/Drop Specs for the Reese WDH Shank Different from the Manufacturer

Question:

Im towing a 1978 Airstream/Argosy which calls for a hitch ball height of 17 1/2 inches. My 4runner has a receiver height, measured at the top of the opening, of 17 inches. The hitch is an old Reese dual cam sway control setup with 2 5/16ths ball and trunnion bars. The trailer is 2500 pounds dry, 3500 loaded. I think I need at least a 2 inch drop . I have seen conflicting statistics regarding the drop on this draw bar. Reese says 54998 would work but your site says it doesnt work. Can you clarify? or recommend an alternate shank.

The Reese Weight Distribution Shank part # RP54998 will provide up to a 2" drop when used with trunnion spring bars and measuring from the top edge of the shank to the platform of the weight distribution head. I understand that other vendors/manufactures may have different specs depending on how where they measure but so long as you are aware of where the measurements being taken from this should not matter.

If you need more than a 2" drop, the Reese Weight Dist Shank part # RP3215 which provides up to a 5-3/4" drop will be your next best option. I have attached an article on measuring hitch height for you as well.
