Installation of Pro Series Hitch Cargo Carrier # PS1040100 on 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
Question:
I have a 2012 Jeep Wranger with a stock spare tire. Im concerned that this rack elevates above the hitch and I wonder if I can install that main bar upside down so that the rack sits below the hitch rather than above. I am ok with drilling and taping new holes, I just want to know what your thoughts are. I certainly dont have an issue with ground clearance on the Wrangler. This looks like exactly the solution I need. Also, are any of the connections on the main rack welded or is everything bolt-together?

Since the capacity of the Pro Series Hitch Cargo Carrier, part # PS1040100, is derived from the design and correct assembly of the cargo carrier, I cannot recommend to modify the assembly or installation in any way. When a part is modified it can reduce the integrity and safety of the cargo carrier, along with the weight capacity.
The shank on the cargo carrier measures 12 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the raised side of the platform and raises 4 inches for clearance at the rear of the carrier, for going through dips and entering steep drives. I am including a picture with the dimensions shown.
If you are worried about the cargo carrier interfering with the stock spare tire you can measure on your hitch from the center of the hitch pin hole back to the farthest edge of your spare tire, and up 4 inches. If that measurement is less than 12 inches you should not have any problems with the cargo carrier clearing the spare tire.
You might also want to look at a hitch cargo carrier that will have a straight shank instead of an elevated shank like the Curt Hitch Cargo Carrier, part # C18109.
Most of the cargo carrier manufacturers when designing the carrier will take into consideration of a spare tire on the back of a vehicle and allow adequate clearance.
I am including a link to a FAQ page on hitch mounted cargo carriers.
