License Plate Light Blinks With Turn Signals On Trailer

Question:

Trailer lights stopped working. Replaced the quick connect harness, the 4 wire test plug shows everything working. trailer not on ball Hook wires up to trailer and activate the left turn signal. Plate lights and brake lights both blink with directional. The trailer indicator light blinks dimly. I have checked the ground, and wiring, I cannot find the short to ground. Is it possibly a bulb, trailer connector or something im not thinking about

It sounds like you have tested the vehicle side trailer connector and everything was working correctly therefore that would point to the trailer as being the cause of the problem. In regards to the brake lights blinking with the turn signals activated, this is completely normal as the trailer brake and turn signals are on the same circuit. However, if the license plate light also blinks then you have a short on the running light wire which is usually brown. Therefore, you need to trace this wire from the back of the license plate light up to the trailer connector while looking for shorts. I also recommend checking the pins inside the trailer connector for corrosion. In regards to the dim lights, this is a ground issue so what you need to do is ground each tail light to the main trailer ground as that usually fixes the issue.

If all else fails, we do have the 35 Ft 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness part # A35W42B which you could use to rewire the trailer.
