Can the Yakima 60 Track System Be Installed On Naked Roof Vehicles?

Question:

I see Yakima 54 inch and 60 inch rails for sale. 54-inch advertised for naked vehicle roofs whereas 60-inch is advertised for shells only. Video shows 54 inch attaches with threaded rivets - which will work in my case, but my van chevy astro could use a longer rail. Does the 60-inch attach the same way? Will 60 -inch attach to naked astro van roof by rivets and drilled holes. Please confirm that I would not need to remove headliner in either case. thanks.

You can use either the Yakima 54" tracks # Y01127 or 60" tracks # Y01135 on naked roofs without needing to remove the headliner, and as long as you're careful, you won't damage the headliner during installation.

It should be noted that the 60" tracks are usually too long for most vehicles with naked roofs, which is why the title is so vague. The Yakima 54" kit comes with the PlusNut Hardware but to install the 60" tracks on a naked roof you would need to purchase a PlusNut Hardware kit # Y8880039 in order to install this track kit on your 2004 Chevy Astro Van. This kit allows you to install the tracks on your naked roof (this kit is included with the 54" tracks, not the 60").

To complete your roof rack, you'll need the Landing Pads # Y00221 and the Yakima Control Towers # Y53TR and cross bars- the 60" Yakima Cross bars are # Y00422 , but you'll want to measure your roof's width to determine which cross bars are going to be the best fit. You also may want to add a wind fairing to help reduce wind noise- I've linked all of the Yakima wind fairings to this answer, but you'll want to choose the one that most closely matches the width of your tracks.

I've also linked one of our help articles on roof rack installation that might be helpful for you as well.
