Is Adding Larger Tires A Good Way To Lift My Forest River Camper with Tandem Axles?

Question:

I have a Forest River RBS 220 with ST205X75R14 tires, I would like the trailer to sit a little higher, it drags coming out of the drive. Can I raise the trailer by using larger tires or would this be a problem due to the tires being too close together because of the tandem axle? If this could work what would be the largest size you would recommend?

Adding slightly larger tires than your current ST205x75xR14 might help a little bit; but the Provider ST215/75R14 # TTWTR21514 tires that you were looking at are only going to raise your trailer about 6/10", so I'm not sure those are going to be the best way to go. The other thing that comes into play, in addition to the space between the tandem axles, is the space between your current tires and the bottom of the frame of the trailer. With all that being said, I don't think you're going to see any significant difference in your clearance by just going with the biggest tires you can fit since it's a tandem axle trailer.

I think the best solution for getting some added clearance is going to be adding a lift kit like the Tandem Axle Lift Kit # RR23QX. A kit like this adds about 2" of clearance from the ground. The other option would be dependent on where your springs are currently mounted-either over or under the axle. If they're currently under the axle, you could use the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Kit # K71-384-00 which is designed to fit 2-3/8" diameter axles. This will give you a bit more lift than the Lippert kit by moving your leaf springs to the top of the axle.

If you can provide me with a bit more information about your axles, like their capacity and diameter, I can help you determine which kit will work best on your trailer. In order to get information on your axles, you'll need to check the sticker or plate attached to it. If you can't find that, or it's come off, you'll want to reach out to your manufacturer to determine what you've got.
