Malone Roof Rack and Canoe Carrier for Carrying Wide Canoe on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Question:

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee w/ Old Town Discovery 133 canoe Can these: MPG112MD Big Foots Be mounted OUTSIDE the longitudinal frame rails on these: MPG202 58 in bars The canoe is much wider at the beam 40.5 in than the spacing on my factory roof rails. Carried it once on the factory bars and the gunnels are at the extreme working edge of the bars ~34 in lost one of the foam blocks since they did not sit flush. My eye approximation says putting the MPG202 bars closer together front to rear would allow the gunnels to rest OUTSIDE the factory rails IF the Big Foots can be mounted on the extended ends of 58 in bars.

I have a perfect solution for you at essentially the same price point but it is not recommended to mount the Malone BigFoot Pro Canoe Carrier # MPG112MD on the outside of the feet of the Malone SteelTop Roof Rack - Square Crossbars # MPG202 because this type of set up will not be as stable as the more centered option I recommend.

Instead of the square crossbars, what I highly recommend for your 40-1/2 inch canoe is the BigFoot Pro Canoe Carrier # MPG112MD with the Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack - Aero Crossbars # MPG215.

The AirFlow bars are 50 inches long so you will have plenty of crossbar space to mount your canoe on the BigFoot carrier. This is going to be a much better option because it will be more stable, more secure and easier to mount your canoe. Additionally, the aero crossbars of the AirFlow are going to be significantly quieter than square crossbars which will make the drive to your destination much more enjoyable.
