Is There Supposed to be Play Between Hangers and Leaf Springs

Question:

This hanger is for 1 3/4inch wide springs, but it is 1 7/8 to 1 15/16inch wide inside. Is it supposed to be drawn down crushed with the bolt to the width of the springs, or are the 1/16+ gaps to be preserved?

There has to be a bit of play between the leaf spring bushings and the hangers so that the suspension components can move freely as needed. If you torqued down the bolt to the point the hanger flexed in and prevented movement you'd have a very harsh ride quality since the suspension would be ineffective.

Ideally you want the leaf spring to sit as level as possible on your trailer. Since the equalizer used on the trailer can vary in height sometimes the center hanger will set level with the others or it can hang lower depending on the equalizer used.…
