Lowering Utility Trailer That Has Leaf Springs Above Axle

Question:

I have a utility trailer that I wish to lower as much as possible and am about to put the axle on top of the springs. However, the trailer has brakes and presently is equipped with 14 inch wheels with tires rated for 2200 max load. I would like to lower the height of the tire and am willing to use a 12 inch wheel if it fits over the brakes. I would like to get a rating near the 2200 lbs if at all possible. The highest I can find at this writing is 1520 lbs. What is available in the 12 inch and do you know if it fits over most brakes??

If you need to maintain close to a 2,200 pound maximum load per tire on your utility trailer you are going to have to stick with your existing 14 inch tire and wheels. We don't have any 12 or even 13 inch tire and wheels that approach this type of weight capacity.

If you are still needing replacements the Kenda Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10235 is a great option that features a 2,200 pound maximum load at 75 psi, and has a speed rating of 81 mph. If you need a wheel to go with it, you could use the Dexstar # AM20352. You would need to have these mounted at a local shop.

I have attached a couple short video reviews that you can check out as well.

Since you won't be able to lower the trailer using smaller tires, flipping the axle so that it sits above the leaf springs is your best option (this will provide a much greater drop compared to smaller tires anyway). To do this you can use the Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-385-00 if you have a 3 inch round axle or # K71-384-00 if you have a 2-3/8 inch round axle.
