2001 Dodge Ram Pickup Trailer Hitch, Brake Controller, Wiring and Towing Parts

Question:

Im considering purchasing the Prodigy P2 brake controller. Can you tell me everything I would need to hook this up including a 7 pin trailer connector harness for towing a camping trailer. I am also considering the Valley hitch V81780. Looking forward to your reply. Thanks.

The Prodigy P-2 brake controller and hitch you have selected will work great for your 2001 Dodge Ram as long as you do not have the deep drop rear bumper. In that case you would need hitch # 41504.

The method of installing the controller will depend on how your truck is currently equipped. If you already have the 4-pole trailer connector, you can order the P2 part # 90885 and use the corresponding wiring adapter # 3020-P. You will also need an adapter, part # 37185 to convert the 4-pole to a 7-way. The adapter will plug directly into the 4-pole, with 4 loose wires remaining. The black wire will connect to the red or orange wire that can be located along the drivers side frame rail. Follow the 4-pole wiring harness back a short distance to find the orange wire. The blue wire on the adapter will attach to a blue wire also located on the frame rail. The white wire will ground to the frame, and the purple wire will tap into the reverse light circuit if your trailer has reverse lights.

If your Ram has no trailer connector of any kind, you will first need to install a 4-pole connector, part # 118329. You will also need our Brake Controller Install Kit, part # ETBC7. The install kit contains everything necessary to install the controller.

Finally, you will need a draw bar and a trailer ball. I would recommend the # 2753 draw bar, and if you need a 1-7/8 inch ball, part # 19260, part # 63845 for a 2 inch ball, or part # 63847 for a 2-5/16 inch ball.

I have provided links to these items as well as instruction links and installation videos to guide you through the wiring and installation. The install video shows the install kit being used on a different vehicle, but the procedure on your Ram would be similar.
